The Book House – Over 40 years in Dinkytown
The Book House is a classic used book store with a heavy focus on academic subjects. They buy and sell books of all types, for cash or store credit. They’ve been Dinkytown since 1976, originally located near the corner of 14th Ave SE & 5th St until 2012 when the site was sold for construction of The Venue. At that time, the shop was relocated to their current location on the 2nd floor of the Dinkydale building. Kristen Eide-Tollefson, who founded the shop in 1976 with three others and is still the remaining owner, entered into an ownership transition agreement with long-time managers Ryan Hinderaker and Matt Hawbaker in early 2016.
Their favorite part of being in Dinkytown is the street culture, the mix of students, collectors, and book-lovers who come in the door, the community of independent businesses (and even some of the corporate businesses!)
Some of the rare books in their collection include: an early edition of Captain Cook’s voyages; Aleister Crowley’s version of the I Ching (Yi King); David Foster Wallace’s first book, Broom of the System, in a scarce hardcover edition; a very rare book of photographs of Japanese author Yukio Mishima, signed by Mishima and the photographer, Eikoh Hosoe. The also have many, many more out of print oddities and rarities.
Their Rare Book Room was once occupied by another book shop, the legendary Larry Dingman’s Dinkytown Antiquarian. They like to say the space “knows” how to be a book shop!
Next time you’re in Dinkytown and looking for somewhere to loose track of time, stop in and say hi! They’ll help you find what you’re looking for, and probably a few more things you didn’t know you wanted…
